COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course meets OSPI’s STEM requirements

With this course, educators will explore countless apps and endless resources available for use in Pre-K, elementary, middle school or high school settings.  Participants will select either Bloom’s Taxonomy, Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences or SMAR digital pedagogical framework to support their choice for developing the best digital curriculum for their program. We will begin with the basic foundation of how to select great apps for your digital education toolkit and continue to explore different individualized curriculum areas that meet your teaching grade level, program and/or specialty areas. Finally, we will expand this developed curriculum with the provided downloadable evaluative digital app rubrics and formative assessments that may help to support and guide you through the app selection process. The online, self-guided, bibliography lists tons of resources.  There are apps to access, upload, explore, discover, and implement to enhance your curriculum. 
           This course is excellent for any individual, collaborative group study or professional development cohorts wishing to take their iPad curriculum to the next level.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course, participants will have:

1. A theoretical pedagogical foundation to support the development of digital iPad curriculum.
2. Enhanced knowledge and understanding of the use of iPad apps in the classroom.
3. Develop digital applications resource list.
4. Downloaded digital apps that may support and transform the classroom curriculum.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of all specified assignments is required for issuance of hours or credit. The Heritage Institute does not award partial credit.


HOURS EARNED:
Completing the basic assignments (Section A. Information Acquisition) for this course automatically earns participant’s their choice of CEUs (Continuing Education Units), or Washington State Clock Hours or Oregon PDUs. The Heritage Institute offers CEUs and is an approved provider of Washington State Clock Hours and Oregon PDUs.




 

UNIVERSITY QUARTER CREDIT INFORMATION

REQUIREMENTS FOR UNIVERSITY QUARTER CREDIT
Continuing Education Quarter credits are awarded by Antioch University Seattle (AUS). AUS requires 75% or better for credit at the 400 level and 85% or better to issue credit at the 500 level. These criteria refer both to the amount and quality of work submitted.

  1. Completion of Information Acquisition assignments 30%
  2. Completion of Learning Application assignments 40%
  3. Completion of Integration Paper assignment 30%



 

CREDIT/NO CREDIT (No Letter Grades or Numeric Equivalents on Transcripts)
Antioch University Seattle (AUS) Continuing Education Quarter credit is offered on a Credit/No Credit basis; neither letter grades nor numeric equivalents are on a transcript. 400 level credit is equal to a "C" or better, 500 level credit is equal to a "B" or better. This information is on the back of the transcript.

AUS Continuing Education quarter credits may or may not be accepted into degree programs. Prior to registering determine with your district personnel, department head or state education office the acceptability of these credits for your purpose.

Introduce Yourself:  Write 1-2 pages introducing yourself and include the following:

  • Describe your professional situation.
  • Include reasons for being interested in this course, what you expect to take away, and your general level of experience and proficiency with iPad apps that you include within your current curriculum. 

Assignment #2: Read Text (download or paperback)

Read the digital texts for your grade level shown under Assignment Resources in the Bibliography and write a 2-3 page word document discussing your selected text and some apps about that which you would like to acquire more information about.   • Access this sites and search for any chosen area; Reading, Math, Science.....Choose a core subject that best represents your teaching area or interest. Using the chosen rubric you selected in Assignment #4 review and evaluate a minimum two, (2+) or more, chosen and downloaded apps.
  • Access the tab from your pedagogical framework you have chosen and downloaded in Assignment #3. (“Either Bloom’s, Multiple Intelligence”, or SMAR these can be broken down under the “Multiple Intelligence, CBL or Blooms” tab. Using your rubric, review and evaluate one (1+) chosen apps per modality or domain. This represents a total of (6-8+) selected apps, or more, to explore, evaluate and review.
  • Access the “Nets” Tab: Select and review one (1) chosen app from one of the following areas: Communication, Creativity, Research, Critical Thinking, Digital Citizenship, or Technology Operations (1+ or more apps).
  • Access Teacher Tab: Select and review one chosen apps; one app from Management and one app from Resources. (1+)
  • This will be a minimum of ten (10+) or more apps to download and review.

  • Access the Podcast tab. Choose one of the educator created Podcast to review.

Activity:
Write a 3-5 page word document that reviews each downloaded and accessed app. Include the name of the apps, a picture of the icon, the company, price, URL, year it was developed, description of the app and how the app measured out with your chosen rubric.  Also, for each app discuss how you might incorporate this app into your curriculum. Include an overview and review of the webcast you reviewed.

Assignment: Given the Inquiry Cycle, create a unit of study that is supported and enhanced with iPad apps. Post either a 5-6 page word document, a mind map, a Prezi or a Haiku Deck presentation of your unit plan.

Assignment #9: Implement Unit Plan

Implement the unit plan you developed in assignment # 9 and write a 3-5 page overview, include reflection and possible adjustments for each lesson. Please include mention of any specific student achievements and include samples of work products.

Assignment #10: (500 Level ONLY)

In addition to the 400 level assignments, complete one of the following:

Option A)
Conduct online research for articles that point to the advantages and challenges of using iPad apps for instruction, and summarize your findings in a 2-3 page paper.
                                                       OR
Option B)
Prepare and present your unit of study from assignment #9 in a Power Point, Prezi, or Haiku Deck format to your faculty, collaborative group, or to a colleague. Accompany your presentation with a 1-2 word format paper, in which you discuss any comments, adjustments, or ideas that may have been generated by your presentation.

Write a 350-500 word Integration Paper answering these 5 questions:

  1. What did you learn vs. what you expected to learn from this course?

  5. How and with what other school or community members might you share what you learned?

Debora Supplitt M.F.A-A.Ed./M.Ed. received her Masters (M.Ed.) and Bachelor of Art (B.A.) degree from San Francisco State University and Masters of Fine Arts in Art Education (M.F.A.-A.Ed,) from Boston University. She has worked with students of all levels, including preschool, elementary, middle school, high school and professional educators, since 1980. She is certified in Washington, Oregon and California in Pre/K-12-Adult Special and Elementary Education and is highly qualified in the core areas of Art, Music, Reading, and Special Education as well as being a trained Intervention Specialist. Debora knows the importance of providing a creative environment where all students and teachers can thrive. Presently she is working in her dream position as a full time middle school Art Teacher. Debora provides classroom teachers with the tools and resources needed to integrate art into the daily curriculum and is always busy developing new, creative and fun workshops for teachers. She is passionate about providing exciting, meaningful, useful and fun filled continuing education for all teachers.
